Chicago re-defines ‘clean energy’

The streets of Chicago are cleaner today…thanks to the sun. In March, the city started installing garbage cans that use solar power to compact the trash. It’s a really efficient way to manage rubbish and take advantage of solar power at the same time.

First, the compactors hold about five times the amount of a regular receptacle, so they can be emptied less frequently and are less prone to overfilling.

Second, the city did not have to install expensive electrical connections to make them work.  The power comes from the sun.

Third, these garbage cans are pretty smart.  They have sensors that alert the city when they are full, so a crew can come out an empty them.

The solar-powered trash compactors on Chicago streets show how different sustainable ideas can come together to form a very “neat” solution.
